The International Gemological Institute (IGI) of Japan is the Japanese branch of one of the world’s most extensive independent gemological organizations. While the parent body was founded in Antwerp in 1975, IGI Japan has played a critical role in bridging international grading standards with the highly meticulous Japanese jewelry market.

IGI began its global expansion in the late 20th century to meet the demands of major jewelry hubs. The Tokyo laboratory was established to provide the Japanese market with a faster, internationally recognized alternative to domestic labs, quickly becoming a staple for Japan's high-volume retailers and department stores.

In the early 2000s, IGI Japan distinguished itself by becoming a first mover in the certification of lab-grown diamonds. While many traditional labs were hesitant to grade synthetics, IGI Japan embraced the technology, providing the transparency that Japanese consumers—known for their high demand for technical accuracy—required.

IGI Japan is widely credited with helping standardize the "Hearts & Arrows" diamond cut grading in the region. Because Japanese collectors prioritize "Ideal" cuts and perfect symmetry, IGI’s specialized reports became the trusted benchmark for this specific diamond phenomenon.
