CGL was established in Tokyo by Masao Namiki and Akio Takahashi. During Japan's rapid economic growth in the 1960s, the jewelry market was booming, but it lacked standardized grading systems, leading to inconsistent transactions. Namiki and Takahashi traveled across Japan holding seminars to spread gemological knowledge before formally opening the lab in the Taito-ku district.

The Formation of AGL (1981): Recognizing the need for unified standards, CGL was a founding member of the Association of Gemmological Laboratories (AGL), Japan. Masao Namiki served as its first representative, helping to create the framework for the "Strict Japanese Standards" that are still respected today.

Technological Leadership

CGL is renowned for its heavy investment in high-end scientific equipment, often moving faster than international labs to identify new treatments:

The "Cape Detector" (1998): CGL developed this world-first machine to differentiate between different types of diamonds, a critical step in identifying synthetic or treated stones.

Advanced Analysis: They were among the first to utilize LA-ICP-MS (Laser Ablation) and FT-IR spectroscopy for origin determination of rubies and sapphires, providing the high-level data that high-end collectors demand.

Heart & Cupid™: CGL is the primary authority for the "Heart & Cupid" (Hearts and Arrows) cut grade in Japan. Their specialized reports for this phenomenon are a staple for the Japanese bridal market.

Significance for Designers and Collectors

Market Share: CGL holds the largest market share in Japan. If you are sourcing a premium diamond or a rare colored stone from a Japanese wholesaler, it is highly likely to come with a CGL "Sorting Memo" or a full report.

The Research Room: CGL maintains Japan’s largest private gem research facility. Their "CGL News" is a vital resource for the industry, often publishing the first warnings about new glass-filled treatments or synthetic screening challenges.
